An often overlooked factor when choosing skincare products is skin type. This should be corrected and come first and foremost when choosing skincare products. Here are some things you can look at to help determine your skin type.
- NORMAL SKIN- Usually a well balanced look. The T-zone has a balanced look and skin is not prone to breakouts or flakiness.
- SENSITIVE SKIN- Skin can either show visible signs of redness or dryness, especially when using normal skin care products or there can just be feelings of discomfort.
- OILY SKIN- Look out for a shiny look or a greasy feeling. Also frequent breakouts and blemishes are often present.
- DRY SKIN- Pay attention to a flaky, scaly or rough look. Also itchiness or irritation may be present. The look and feel of dehydration can also mean you have dry skin.
- COMBINATION SKIN- Pay careful attention to the T-zone. If these areas look oily and shiny and the other areas of the face are dry or normal then you more than likely have combination skin.
If after reading this you cannot determine your skin type, these are two methods you can use to help you determine your skin type.
1. BLOTTING METHOD- Use a blotting paper and gently put the different areas of your face. Pay attention to what areas you are putting where on the paper. Or you can use different blotting papers for each area.
Hold paper up to a light. This helps you to determine how much oil is present.
If there is little or no oil on the sheet then more yhan likely you have dry skin.
If the paper is saturated with oil then you more than likely you have oily skin.
If there is only oil visible where you patted your T-zone and not in the places you patted your other areas then you more than likely have combination skin.
2. BARE-FACED METHOD- Using a cleanser, cleanse your face and pat dry.
Do not moisturise or use any product on face.
Wait 30 minutes and then examine your cheeks, chin, nose and forehead.
If your skin feels tight then you likely have dry skin.
If you notice shine on your T-zone areas as well as your cheeks then you more than likely have oily skin.
If there is just shine present in the T-zone area and not the cheeks then you more than likely have combination skin.
